Mrs. Jurecka
Mary Alice Deer Jurecka passed away peacefully in her home on November 21 in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was born November 28, 1919 in Rosebud, Texas, the tenth child of Alice
Dewberry and James Sanford Deer. She spent the majority of her youth in Beeville, Texas,
where she graduated from A.C. Jones high school in 1938. As a teen, Mary Alice was active
in school social clubs and represented Beeville in several area coronations.
On March 11, 1942, Mary Alice married Hubert Buster Jurecka prior to his being called
to active duty in the Signal Corps, U.S. Army. Their first child, Alice “Smackie” Jurecka, was
born shortly before he was sent to England in the fall of 1943. Mary Alice and her daughter remained in Beeville until Buster’s return in 1946, when they moved to Caripito, Venezuela, where Buster resumed his career with Creole Petroleum Corporation. Two more children, daughters Diane and Janette, were born in Caripito.
Mary Alice loved her life as an expatriate, making lifelong friends from all over the world and enjoying golf, bridge, social events and raising her family. She often said their travels in
Venezuela, Central America, and the Caribbean provided her with an education she never dreamed of having. She truly enjoyed their shipboard travels from the U.S. to Venezuela.
Following Buster’s retirement in 1965, Mary Alice became a longtime Corpus Christi resident,
enjoying golf and playing cards at River Hills Country Club in Robstown. She enjoyed several
memorable adventures with her two dear sisters, Winnie Deer Ramirez and Christine Deer
Harrell, both of Beeville and now deceased. She dearly loved her church family as well, particularly the Busy Bees Craft Group and the Fig Tree at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Corpus Christi. More recently, she has been a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Corpus Christi, and has been a blessed recipient of their faithful ministry.
A member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Mary Alice held a longtime interest in genealogy. She loved to do handwork and has gifted many with quilts, quillows, afghans
and other handmade items. She was an exceptional cook, and her chocolate cake recipe will be enjoyed by many generations to come.
Preceded in death by her parents, siblings and husband of 54 years, Mary Alice is survived by her daughters and their husbands: Alice “Smackie” Kerr, Diane (Jim) Bailey, and Janette (Richard) Guy; as well as her grandchildren, Jennifer Carter, Alicia Kerr, Teri Levy, Trey Bailey, Wendy Kirchoff, Michael Cline, Chris Cline, and a step-granddaughter Brenda Lutz, and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, including Mary Jane (Jim) Turnbow of Beeville.
The family would like to thank Mary Alice’s Trinity Towers community for enriching her life. They are particularly grateful for the years of pastoral care by the Rev. John Hardie, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Corpus Christi. And they are forever grateful for the loving kindness
of Gina Zapata and family, who cared for Mary Alice in her final months.
Services were held at St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church on Monday, November 26, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. under the direction of Galloway and Sons Funeral Home in Beeville, with burial at
