The Beeville Little League junior softball girls opened their all-star run on Sunday with a resounding 15-5 victory over Orange Grove. The game was highlighted by Taylor Lawson’s two grand slams.
The contest was played in Port Aransas and the Beeville girls fell behind after one inning as the OG ladies got one run. A scoreless second inning still had the OG ladies out front, but then the Beeville bats got into the swing of things with four runs in the third inning, all four came on Lawson’s first grand slam of the night.
Patricia Longoria, Alexis Pelitire and JJ Hernandez all reached in front of Lawson and with the bases loaded, Lawson powered a pitch that cleared the fence for a 4-1 Beeville lead.
Orange Grove put two more runs on the scoreboard in their half of the third inning to pull closer at 4-3, but the Beeville girls weren’t finished at the plate. A seven-run fourth frame gave the Beeville ladies a little breathing room with a 11-3 advantage. Lawson stroked another grand slam in the inning to provide most of the offense. Skylar Nelson, with another home run, Hernandez and Destiny Carralez also had hits in the explosive fourth frame.
The game went to the top of the fifth with the score still at 11-3 in favor of Beeville. The local ladies added another four runs in the fifth to move in front 15-3. The big blow in the inning was a triple off the bat of April De Los Santos. Lawson, Victoria Munoz and Celeste Contreras all had hits in the inning. The Orange Grove girls struck for two more runs in the bottom of the fifth but that was all the Beeville ladies would allow. The game went to the ten-run rule after five and the Beeville all-stars recorded their first win of the postseason, 15-5.
The tournament continues in Port Aransas the rest of the week and into next week as the District 29 tournament concludes with the finals on July 6 or July 7 depending on the number of losses of the final two teams in the double elimination tournament.

The opening baseball game for the Zone A minor boys at Beeville Little League complex on Monday night turned out to be all Gregory-Portland as the little Wildcats posted a 9-2 win over the Beeville boys.
The local boys scored in the top of the first as Jonathan Carrillo earned a walk and was followed by a Jonathan Huser single that got Carrillo around to third base. Brandon Nelson popped a single to short left that scored Carrillo and the Beeville boys were in front 1-0. Huser was on the mound for Beeville and set the G-P first three batters down in order, striking out the side.
The Beeville bats went cold and the G-P bats got a little help with a couple of walks and a Beeville error to score two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Another two runs came across in the third for G-P to make it a 4-1 game after three complete.
The local youngsters threatened in the top of the fourth as Carrillo led off with a single to right and eventually made it around to third base but did not score as the G-P pitcher struck out the last two Beeville hitters to preserve the 4-1 lead.
G-P struck for three more runs in the fourth and another two runs in the fifth to move out to a 9-1 advantage entering the final frame. Beeville scored once in the top of the sixth as Nelson reached on a leadoff walk. A wild pitch and a stolen base put Nelson at third and then he scored on another wild pitch to make it a 9-2 ball game. The Beeville boys had runners on base in each inning but could not string together a couple of hits to get a multi-run rally going.
Christopher Sanchez, Huser (two hits), Christopher Salazar, Nelson and Titus Puente all collected hits for the Beeville offense.
The double elimination tournament is continuing for the rest of the weekend and into next week. Rain and weather will play a role in the scheduling. Check the brackets for updates at the Beeville Little League Complex in Veterans Memorial Park.
