Highway Patrol Trooper Shawn Stephenson, left, fills out an accident report Friday afternoon, just before 5 p.m., as Deputy Commander Karl Brune and Deputy Sgt. Kevin Behr check out the wreckage of a 1992 GMC pickup discovered in the brush on the east side of U.S. Highway 181 in Tulsita. According to the report on file with the Department of Public Safety, the driver, 42-year-old Edgar Allen Watts of Beeville, was southbound when his vehicle drifted slightly off the west side of the roadway. Investigators believe Watts overcorrected and his truck went into a sideways skid traveling across the highway and into some brush where it struck a tree just behind the driver's seat and ended up wrapped around the trunk. The report also indicated that Watts had been traveling at an unsafe speed when the accident occurred. Officers at the scene believed Watts probably died on impact and that the truck had been there some time before it was discovered.
