Throughout Beeville, merchants were stocking their shelves and marking down prices in preparation for this weekend’s tax free sales.
At Bealls Department Store, employees are gearing up for the sales tax holiday.
From now through Sunday, items ranging from boots to diapers will be tax free, to relieve some of the expenses of preparing for the new school year.
“We are trying to get ready for it,” said Luisa Pfahler, area manager at the department store. “We are marking everything down.”
With the discounts on most everything a child will need to wear for school, Pfahler said Tuesday that along with stocking additional merchandise, they will also have more personnel in the store.
“We usually work more hours those two days,” she said.
At Wal-Mart SuperCenter, Robert Aguirre, assistant manager, said that the shelves are already stocked and everything is in place for the shoppers.
“Everything is already set so the people can come and shop,” he said Thursday morning.
Like Pfahler, he expects a large crowd but added that this isn’t the busiest shopping time of the year.
“It is maybe the second or third for us,” he said. “Christmas and Thanksgiving are the biggest.”
Steve Klatt, manager of the Walgreens in Beeville, says his store is stocked and ready for the tax free weekend. “We’re all set up and ready to go,” he said. “We even have extra manpower scheduled this weekend.”
The holiday exempts most clothing and footwear priced under $100 from sales tax, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend.
