An accident in a swimming pool last Wednesday evening has taken the life of a 12-year-old Beeville boy.
Bee County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Steve Martin said this week that the victim, Nicholas Lamb, was visiting his uncle and aunt on Hilltop Road when the accident occurred. Lamb and his 7-year-old female cousin were playing in the pool owned by James and Susan Lamb when he apparently hit his head, fell into the pool and drowned.
“Just a terrible accident,” officer Martin said.
The adults were nearby working in the yard when the victim reportedly started jumping from a trampoline into the water. Later, according to the cousin, the boy put an inflatable slide between the trampoline and the pool and started jumping from the trampoline to the slide and then into the pool.
The cousin told investigators that she saw Lamb jump into the water and she thought he had hit his head on the side of the pool. However, the cousin said he came to the surface and seemed to take a breath before going back under the water.
The cousin said she thought the boy was holding his breath but after he failed to return to the surface she called to her father and the uncle jumped into the water and pulled the boy back to the surface.
It was at 9:39 p.m. that deputies received a call concerning the accident. Martin said the family was rushing the victim to the emergency room at Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville in a private vehicle and performing CPR on the victim.
The report said Lamb was not breathing and had no pulse when he arrived at the hospital but the staff there managed to revive him and have him airlifted to Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi.
Martin said the staff at the Driscoll pronounced the victim dead at 5:50 p.m. Sunday.
“It will happen so quickly,” Martin said. He described the victim as a “typical adventuresome boy. It just shows that those things will happen.”
